Moate Show Notes 28.6.11
Plans for this year’s show are now firmly underway; the show this year will take place on Saturday 27th of August. As this is the 170th hosting of our annual show we hope to increase the size of the show again. This year we will host two All Ireland finals at our show the A. Browne Oil All Ireland Filly Foal final and Digan’s Londis Chocolate cook of the year All Ireland final. As well as these two finals we will have we will have eleven All Ireland qualifiers for other shows throughout the country, full details of these qualifiers can be found on our website www.moateshow.com. This year the All Ireland filly foal Final has been selected by the Irish Horse board (along with ten other All Ireland finals hosted at other shows, this is to improve the breeding of horses in the country) to receive a further €500 in Prize money and they have agreed to put in the additional top up this will increase the prize money for the class to €2500, the horse board have also agreed to give €50 appearance to every entrant who does not receive a prize in the class to cover their travelling costs for all the entrants. This is in addition to our long term sponsor A.B Oil who is continuing to sponsor the event. Due to the number of enquiries in our cattle classes for Limousin cattle in the show we have decided to introduce them to the show this year and we hope to have a good turnout for these classes. This year we will again host our show in the same venue as last year in our new showground’s in the field beside Anthony Browne’s filling station on the old Dublin Road out of Moate, because it has been such a success there for the last two years. Finally we would like to congratulate Athlone show on their very successful show which was held last Sunday.
LATEST NEWS FROM THE SHOW
The 169th Moate Agricultural show took place on Saturday 28th of August, the weather on the build up for the show was fantastic and the day of the show was promised to be the best day of the week. Early on the morning of the show the sun was shining and there were no clouds in the sky all looked good for the day of the show, then unfortunately for about 45 minutes there was a shower and this threatened to dampen the spirits of the show, however there was the light at the end of the tunnel and the sun came out which made for a fantastic day.
This year we had the honour of having a World Champion officially opening the show. Ballinahown Man Mark Rohan, just over a week after competing in the world championship in Canada , winning gold for Ireland ,kindly agreed to open the show. Due to his efforts and that of his teammates, the Irish team have now qualified for the Olympics in London in 2012. We would like to thank Mark for his time and honouring us with his presence on the day and we would like to wish him all the best in the future and especially in the Olympics in London in 2012.
The entries at the show were up again on last year’s record entries and it was great to see so many local winners in numerous different categories. Also the attendance was up again this year on last year’s record attendance, this obviously was helped by the new motorway network that goes through Moate with no traffic delays in the town and entry and exit to the show guaranteed within minutes.
Our All-Ireland finals are always going to be highlights of the show, this year the quality was better than ever. The first All-Ireland that was ever held in Moate was the A. Browne Oil Filly foal, and in the case of the Newell’s from Claregalway it was a case if at first you don’t succeed then try and try again. This year they won it for the first time but were in the top five, four out of the last five years. In the Mc Grath Dog Food Cocker Spaniel we had another Galway winner but it was a repeat from last year when it went Tuam to Kevin o Donnell. The Joe Dignan Londis Chocolate Cook went to Ethel Llyod from Winetown, Rathown here in Co Westmeath and it is great to see one of our All-Ireland’s remaining at home here in our own County.
We had a great interest in our show jumping especially the pony jumping, this was helped in no uncertain terms by the additional Grand Prix which was sponsored by Central Truck and Plant Repair. This really appealed to the spectators at the show. In the horse jumping the highlight had to be the High wall sponsored by Miley Dunning Farrier and Liam Porter MVB., MRCVS. , indeed the competition was so great we thought we were going to share the first prize as there was so little to separate these exceptional jumpers. In the end there was one horse that stood out from the rest and jumped an exceptional 6’8” (a new record for Moate) .The horse was owned by Jim Derwin, it was great as Jim sponsors another show jumping class at the show
The finale to the show was the South Westmeath Hunt Chase as always with the hunt chase there was great excitement generated with the uncertainty of what could happen next, but in the end The Ward Union Hunt edged out the Roscommon Hunt. This year again there was a further interest in the photography section with entries in the classes averaging 20 entries per class, due to these numbers we will have to look at entering more classes with additional categories to facilitate the level of interest next year.
Many thanks to all our sponsors who have supported us through thick and thin and especially now in the hard times that we are currently experiencing, and you ,the public who continue to support our show.
Finally we would like all who helped out with the show in the build up and who offered their time to the show especially, our young people who got involved with the show. We had Robert O’Gorman, Gareth Murray, Mattie Buckley and Kevin Fox who were in the Field helping out during the Week, and Karen McManus who processed all the entries in the weeks prior to the show and filled out the entry numbers and Christine, Nicola, Deidra, Amy and all the girls from Moate All Whites who helped out in the Canteen. Not forgetting all you who gave your time we really appreciate it, thanks very much for all your help, there are too many to mention. We have now launched our website web site, www.moateshow.com. On the website there is a” contact us” section where your feedback is greatly appreciated and will be taken into consideration for next year’s show. We would like to congratulate Lorraine Keena from Belair, Ballycumber who starred on the Offaly Camogie team that won the All-Ireland final on Sunday the 12th September.
