CONDY and James Kernan had an incredible record in the Aga Khan Trophy. As part of Ireland’s team that won three titles consecutively from 1977 to1979, the pair got a late\ call up in 1977 and con-firmed Sean Daly’s decision to add them to the team when hardly touching a pole in three rounds. Remarkably, the competition went to a jump-off the following two years and Condy maintained a clean sheet. Kernan came across Condy at Moate Show in Co Westmeath. He explains: “I was at Moate Show and young Ned Cash showed me a horse and told me to buy him. He was a great buy. ”When I bought him he had very little done. He won me Boylan Trophy, a class for Grade Bs, in the RDS in1976. The next year we got a late call up the week of the Horse Show for the AgaKhan team. It was a huge step up in one year but he justified Sean Daly’s brave call.”However, despite those victories on home turf, Kernan selects Hickstead as the venue of their greatest triumph. “He was a small horse and that’s why I never went to any major championships with him – I felt he hadn’t got the scope. The best class we won was at Hickstead. He was only a small horse, he had a big stride.”Today’s competition would suit him because he was such a careful horse. He’d be better today because the fences are so much lighter. He was brilliant; lovely to ride and had a great temperament.”
