Recent article from the Irish Field 1st January 2011 No 6 Condy

CONDY and James Kernan had an incredible record in the Aga Khan Trophy. As part of Ireland’s team that won three titles consecutively from 1977 to1979, the pair got a late\ call up in 1977 and con-firmed Sean Daly’s decision to add them to the team when hardly touching a pole in three rounds. Remarkably, the competition went to a jump-off the following two years and Condy maintained a clean sheet. Kernan came across Condy at Moate Show in Co Westmeath. He explains: “I was at Moate Show and young Ned Cash showed me a horse and told me to buy him. He was a great buy. ”When I bought him he had very little done. He won me Boylan Trophy, a class for Grade Bs, in the RDS in1976. The next year we got a late call up the week of the Horse Show for the AgaKhan team. It was a huge step up in one year but he justified Sean Daly’s brave call.”However, despite those victories on home turf, Kernan selects Hickstead as the venue of their greatest triumph. “He was a small horse and that’s why I never went to any major championships with him – I felt he hadn’t got the scope. The best class we won was at Hickstead. He was only a small horse, he had a big stride.”Today’s competition would suit him because he was such a careful horse. He’d be better today because the fences are so much lighter. He was brilliant; lovely to ride and had a great temperament.”

... towns & villages transformed into cultural playgrounds, with culture in many of its forms including painting, poetry, dance, song, traditional music, experimental works, sport, architecture, sculpture, film, cuisine, history, theatre, local awareness and more...

Please help get Moate involved BY SUPPORTING EVENTS...GO SEE!

Westmeath County Council - Arts
The Council provides support for the existing professional, voluntary, community and amateur arts sectors. It also provides information and advice to the community on all Arts related issues...
Culture Day & Night is a multi national event, specifically based on the island of Ireland, but being celebrated from as far as New York and Belgium, to as close as Mullingar.

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO MAKE MOATE A PART OF IT, you don't have to live in the town, but just want to be part of this event & link in with the wider one! Whether its visual arts, poetry, sport, dance, literature, opera, music, crafts, sculpture, film, photography, amenity space, architecture, history, tours & talks, heritage, street & indoor theatre, cuisine or fashion.

Pick a venue and timeframe within Moate and bring your talents to the Public, or if you already have an event happening that date, let us know so everyone gets a mention on the central Culture Night website... We can help guide you but its really about the community pulling together, doing their part and energising the town and area with creativity & culture for this day and night, all events concluding by 11.00pm.

(It appears that the paved area at the corner of Station Road & Church Street, near the Medical Hall, is being made available by Westmeath Co. Council, so that stall holders may set up their wares...so stay posted & express your interest a.s.a.p., if any, in reserving a pitch there.)

Entry to events for Culture Day & Night should be freely given for the People's enjoyment and celebration! Of course, any items for sale are priced at the seller's discretion, the co-ordinators of the line-up and schedule taking no responsibility for anything other than being guides.
